The thing about staying home is…

…it’s so hard to resist my obsession with food. And especially, my love of baked goods. I really must wonder how other stay-at-home moms stay fit. Any tips? (This is a totally frivolous and mindless post, but hey, one can’t be serious and newsworthy all the time. I mean, I need something to take my mind off the fact that stories about Obama’s racial harmony speech has generated hundreds, maybe thousands, of hateful, racist comments on newspaper web sites.)

Anyway: During my maternity leave, I watched the Food Network all the time. All the time. Until then, I hadn’t been particularly interested in making my own food. I was of the mind that I loved food — and plenty of it — only when someone else cooked and served it to me. I loved eating out, trying new, fancy restaurants as well as holes-in the-walls. I used to make fun of people who slaved over a hot stove all day. But a few episodes into Everyday Italian and Barefoot Contessa and 30-Minute Meals, I was seduced into buying more cooking utensils. Baking pans. More whisks. My family even pitched in and got me a KitchenAid mixer for my birthday. Now, I’m not only a tech gadget freak, I’m also a cooking utensil freak.

I have a long way to go before becoming a good cook, but I’m glad I’ve started. I can’t believe the feeling of accomplishment that sometimes comes with a well-made meal. I’m looking forward to cooking and baking with my daughter as soon as she’s old enough to taste real food.
